Newbury Park dachshund becomes the Wiener Nationals’ first two-time champ. But the event’s big winner is the Seal Beach Animal Care Center.
More about gags than gambling, the 19th annual Wiener Nationals were held between horse races at Los Alamitos Race Course on Saturday.
Luis and Lois Hernandez’s Mr. Schnitzel of Newbury Park became the first two-time wiener- ahem, winner- of the event that benefits the Seal Beach Animal Care Center, duplicating his success of 2012 before a crowd of more than 11,000 people, according to racetrack officials.
In Proving best among scores of dachshunds- having won one of the 10 50-yard trial heats before winning the 50-yard championship event- Mr. Schnitzel earned a $1,000 first-place check, a doghouse in the shape of a Wienerschnitzel restaurant, a trophy and a blanket.
