Those of us who work in advertising and PR understand how powerful words are; they can shape an organization’s culture, they can drive consumers to your brand and, they can destroy your brand in just an instant. I am sure everyone has heard by now about the disgusting vandalism that took place at LeBron James’ home in LA last week. I was struck by how honestly and calmly he responded, I didn’t sense any hate or hostility, just several very purposeful words strewn together to make a very poignant point – racism is still a major issue in America.
The word painted on his gate matters and the words he used to respond matter.
Further proof of the power of words, are these two words: Humanitarian and Role Model. A teacher in Akron, Jennifer Pennington, was so upset about what happened to LeBron that she posted her own positive signs at his home in West Akron. I salute Jennifer for her response, these words speak volumes about both her and Cleveland’s beloved Sir James.
